Happy Monday October 3! And a big thank you to all the co-laborers writing and reporting on COURAGEOUS! As you no doubt know, a little Christian-based film opened this weekend at #4 in the nation, and as the top new film, sharing the thin air with DOLPHIN TALE, MONEYBALL, and THE LION KING.
A few highlights:
1) Ranking. COURAGEOUS was the #4 movie in the country, though it opened against six other movies with almost three times as many screens. It was the #1 new movie of the weekend!
2) Audience. More than 1 million people saw COURAGEOUS this weekend.
3) Box office. Total box-office was $9 million, $2.2 million more than FIREPROOF on opening weekend. It has now made $15,892,000 million in 9 days – Sept. 30 to Oct. 9. Since Oct. 10 to Oct. 21 the total made is $22,156,487. Then $32,000,000 in 6 weeks.
4) Per-screen. Per-screen, COURAGEOUS averaged $7752, almost doubling everyone else.
5) CinemaScore. COURAGEOUS received a rare A+ CinemaScore, a signal to expect strong word-of-mouth in coming weeks.
6) Mainstream press response. Most general entertainment press and reporting outlets were surprised by COURAGEOUS. A couple of early excerpts before the actuals were in:

Dolphins and Jesus Beat Cancer and Dead Kids!“Like the Christian-themed SOUL SURFER, the Kendrick’s holy-cop film (with a $1-million budget) was pitched to the faithful, who came out fervently this weekend and gave it an A-plus CinemaScore. Opening in just 1,161 theaters, COURAGEOUS had the top per-screen average of any movie in the top 25. Even an agnostic would call that heavenly.”
7) Other indicators. Sales of books and resources supporting film’s message—The Resolution books and others—reflect the movie’s spreading influence. Kerusso, maker of t-shirts, reports five times as many COURAGEOUS t-shirts sold as for FIREPROOF. Meanwhile, Facebook fans count on the COURAGEOUS fan page has leapt in a few days from 224,000 to 247,000.
Sherwood Church and its national field of supporters have long prayed for God to do “exceedingly, abundantly more than we could ever ask or imagine,” and He’s doing it. A new Christian feature film Courageous is coming to theatres across Canada Sept. 30, 2011. It follows the lives of 4 Policeman. This family movie touches upon an important topic, Fatherhood/Family. It resembles my story. Born to a mother of 14 years old in Toronto, growing up fatherless. Drug abuse began at 11 years old and continued for 17 years until I met the Risen Savior after reading The Gospel Of John. In 1993 I repented and put my full trust in Christ Jesus to save me from my sins. He broke the chains of addiction and began rebuilding my life. Today I am the father of 7 children. Have you put your trust in Him?
My name is Jimmy Broyden and I am a Canadian who lives on the west coast of Canada. I had the privilege of being the Stunt Coordinator on the new Kendrick Bros./Sherwood Pictures (previous movies they made are Flywheel, Facing The Giants and Fireproof) Christian feature film called Courageous.
On July 26th, 2011 I received a phone call from Producer/Writer Stephen Kendrick informing me that Courageous is coming to theatres across Canada on September 30, 2011. Last summer my 12 year old son Isaac (he is now 13) flew down to Albany, Georgia with me for 3 weeks of filming the stunts. The Kendrick Brothers also let Isaac be an extra and Director Alex Kendrick asked Isaac to say, ‘Action’ and ‘Cut’ for one action sequence. They gave me an acting role to be the Truck Driver in a scene where I say a line or two and lock up the tires skidding the pick-up truck toward lead actor Ken Bevel (Fireproof with Kirk Cameron) who has fallen down to the ground. Ken plays Police Officer Nathan Hayes.
I also Stunt Doubled the lead actors (Alex Kendrick, Ken Bevel, Kevin Downes, T.J Stallings, Ben Davies) for their driving stunts. There is alot of action in the movie Courageous. We had Captain Dodds of the Albany Police Department do a burnout in his police car and travel down back alleys at high speeds.
Other than that No Stunt Doubles were used. The actors executed ALL of their own stunts safely with no injury to themselves or anyone else. I Stunt Doubled Ken Bevel for a stunt where he hangs off of the side of a red Ford truck and my feet drag/scrape the ground while the truck drives erratically at high speed. In the same stunt sequence I drive that Ford truck straight into a big ole Georgian oak tree at 24 mph in the opening scene. These are just a few of the stunts we safely executed.

I was once a prisoner with a life sentence… from 11 years old for 17 years, incarcerated behind the bars of drug addiction in my own Alcatraz. In 1993 Christ Jesus came into my life. I asked Him to take my drug addiction away which would show me that He was really alive like I had read in the Gospel Of John. The Master Locksmith put His key into the lock of my cell opening the steel bars and broke the chains of addiction, pain, sin and a death sentence. I bowed to the King Of Kings and asked Him to forgive me of my sins having read He died for them. The one who died on the cross to pay the full penalty for my sins gave me a full pardon. With a loud declaration heard throughout Heaven He pronounced me, “Not Guilty!”. Today I am still free from the past prison of my mind and learning to take every thought captive for Christ. I am forever in His debt. He who the Son sets free is free indeed. He loves you and desires to do the same for you. To save you from your sins. But you must invite Him into your life. There is a price to pay to follow Christ. Salvation is a gift. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”… Romans 6:23. “You must be born again”…John 3:7. Our God is a Strong Fortress in whom we run to for safety. He is Alive!!!
And as a Christian…”Yet in all these things we are more than Conquerers through Him who loved us. I am persuaded….that nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus” Romans 8:37-39.
