A couple of Stunt stories :

1. “On Black Cat 2, as a Rookie Stuntman I fired machine guns and got shot over 20 times. On a break between camera set ups and with all the stunt guys around, we were talking and I asked the Chinese Director how I can be in so many scenes getting shot so many times. The audience will know it is me I said. “No, you white guys all look the same to us in China”, the Director said. We all had a big laugh and he had me take a bullet hit again in the next shot. That was a great introduction to what it is to be a Stuntman. Coming to work day after day and performing with the boys even though we were banged up and loving every moment of it. Adrenaline is a wonderful thing.

I remember a couple gags as a young Stuntman on Black Cat 2 where just before the Director yelled, “ACTION” it felt like my heart was coming out of my chest. When you have ear plugs in you can almost hear your heart, it’s beating so loud. It was my chance, my one opportunity to do a good job. You get the job done under pressure. It’s exciting! There is something about that word Action. When the Director yells, “ACTION!”, sometimes people forget what to do. You’ve got to learn to be focused, composed and relaxed amidst your adrenaline and the manufactured chaos. You control your adrenaline. You learn to bring it up when you need it and you shut it off or regulate it when it wants to take over”.

2. “One time as a young Stuntman I was chained to a Barbeque while doubling an actor. I had my hands chained behind my back and my body was chained to the BBQ. I was then thrown into the deep end of a pool by two actors and I sink down 10 feet to the bottom. That was the shot. The movie was called, The Fear II : Happy Halloween. The Stunt Coordinator told me about the riskiness of the gag the previous day and said if I didn’t want to do it that would be understandable. I decided to take the job anyway and trusted the Lord to see me through. I have never said no to a stunt. I had a tiny breathing apparatus with 5 minutes of air hidden in my shark head wardrobe costume, which was to sustain me while I waited helplessly at the bottom of the pool for 2 safety divers to extract me from the deep end, take me to the shallow end under water and then lift me up.

The regulator faltered just before I came up. In my mind it was a small glitch. In Stunts small gliches happen. You then correct them and do the shot again. I secretly told the divers/special effects what had happened. They apologized and were dumbfounded the apparatus had failed. Then the Director yells, “we have to do it again, he didn’t sink fast enough.” The divers/special effects assured me it will not fail again, the problem has been solved. I asked the Lord to help me stay calm and focused just in case it failed again. Remember I’m chained. Any problem, it could be over. More sand bags were added to the base of the BBQ so it would sink fast. The two actors picked me and the BBQ up , throw me in again and I sunk like a rock. I hit bottom. The apparatus was working great! I look to the shallow end waiting for the divers. They grab me and begin taking me to the shallow end, when, Oh oh, no air.

The mini-scuba tank had failed again. But this time it failed much sooner than it had done before. I would have much longer to wait till I get fresh air this time . If I panick adrenaline will pulse through my body which will cause my heart rate to increase and I will lose valuable oxygen in my blood. If I try to talk or yell out valuable air escapes from my lungs. I couldn’t use hand signals. There was absolutely no way to communicate. I was in way over my head on this one. It is amazing, the things which went through my mind initially as I sensed death. Many thoughts all at the same time, racing. Then I made a decision to shut my thoughts off and stay focused on one thing. Staying calm and relaxed. I had to lay limp. Closing my eyes I bowed my head and
called out to the Lord and He heard me.

I leaned on Christ and He gave me the peace which surpasses all understanding. I was going to get out of that pool alive or I was going to see Him. Those were some of the longest seconds of my life. It started to go black in my head and I watched the stars coming which is what happens before you pass out. I was sure it was over. Then the divers lifted me up and I took a gulp of cool fresh air. That was a close one. They had no idea the breathing apparatus had failed again. The Director liked that take. I was wrapped. I learned a lot from that stunt. In the future, many safety protectors will be put into place if a stunt like that is ever done again. My wife was there for that stunt, watching the whole time from pool side but I did not tell her what had transpired until the drive home. We prayed and thanked the Lord together for sparing my life. He has a work for me to do.I trust the Lord on every Stunt, to give me wisdom and see me through. That’s just a couple of my stories on what it is to be a Stuntman”.
